a tv station want to do a 5-minute story on my company to air on
national tv, namely CNN and travel chanel. They said it would air 19
times between 6-11PM. The catch is there is ~20k licensing fee I would
have to pay. My question is this licensing fee typical ? I always
thought companies never paid to be on TV unless they were advertising?

Also my company is very small . In order to get a good ROI on my 20k, I
would need to handle 1000 inquiries from the tv coverage. There is no
way I can handle that many inquiries at my present state.

I am thinking to tell them this is not the right opportunity for me at
the moment. Or is this something I should not pass up?

Sounds like a scam to me.
Just calling it a "licensing fee" sounds fishy to me.

They have given me several phone numbers , websites and addresses and
all appear very legitimate. I suppose if you have more than 10 million
year in revenue, 19k fee is peanuts. So assuming this is legitimate, is

it something worth pursuing? My gut feeling says no.

I run into this semi regularly. They are basically getting you to pay
for the production cost - they own the pieces - it may be on TV at 3 am
Friday morning or not at all.

You will end up having a video of your company that you could have done
for 1/10th of the licencing fee and not much else.

This reeks on so many levels.

A broadcaster pays a production house a licensing fee to air their show
not the other way around.

How will it play? What assurrance do you have that it will play?

I've worked in TV for nearly 30 years many of those on magazine style
shows. I never charged (or paid) anybody anything. That would destroy
the journalistic integrity of the piece.

This is fraudulent misrepresentation. I'd consider contacting the BBB
or the police.
