Over the last two years I have observed in my job that there is so
much of duplicated efforts amongst different groups at work. My job is
such that I work with various internal groups and I am in a good
position to experience that so many internal groups are fighting
similar problems but have no learning/sharing from each other.

I think my company can really benefit if this problem can be answered.
Knowledge sharing would effectively mean that there more people
working on a particular problem.

Reason I post this message is:

1. to see if anyone else has experienced it at bigger firms?
2. Ask how to encourage internal knowledge sharing?
3. If some management experts have any ideas to fix this problem and
suggest a better way to have knowledge sharing.

I am not even sure if there are set management principles to address
these kind of problems. But this is something which I definitely want
to address at my workplace.

Any ideas/comments free mindshare will be appreciated.

PS: if this is not a good group to post this msg in, please suggest a
better group.

Thanks in advance.

For the most part, that is just the way it is in real life.

(1) People get rewarded for building silos rather than building
islands.

(2) Having redundant work gets people working in competition
with each other, which encourages them to put in long hours
and work hard despite no increase in compensation.

(3) Why should I share anything from our group if it benefits
your group, but comes out of my budget?

having the two groups work together gets more work done in less time.

because taking a smaller part of both budgets makes the pie bigger.

(funny thing is, where I work we have 2 telescopes. One largely works
the way John describes, the other one the way I describe. Most of
the people are shared ...)

A good way to share knowledge into your business is building
"Communities of Practice", try first with one internal group in wich
you think there are better work relationships. Start to engage with
three or four persons that compromise and lead with share: knowledge,
experiences, practices, ideas or problems. These persons with you
will going to be the core group of the commuty in the field of
knowledge or domain that in group feel like most relevant.

Then continue with invite more persos to the group. Do these meetings
in after hour work, and sell the idea to the general manager and/or
human resource manager. Explain the benefits of the communities like:

- Less errors
- More productivity
- Captured Knowledge for company

You must create motivator to shares ones, the HHRR departament could
help with that.

Is important a technology plataform like email lists and a intranet
with the members of the community and his information and
contributions.

Yes! There is another group: Value-***@googlegroups.com
Sure you can fine more replies from there.
